Next week: DVICE does Japan

Next week: DVICE does Japan

Coming up next week is CEATEC Japan, a big-ass trade show in Tokyo that always has tons of cutting-edge tech on display. This year we’re extra excited about it, though, because we’re going to be live on the scene, raking up tons of hands-on coverage. We’ll also be trolling around Tokyo and Osaka, looking for any cool toys we can get our clumsy gaijin hands on. Watch this space for news from the Land of the Rising Sun starting Tuesday (really early), with even-more-current updates on our Twitter feed.

Full disclosure: Our coverage in Japan is coming to you courtesy of Panasonic, who is flying us out there to check out the show and their HQ. Just so we’re clear: We appreciate Panasonic’s generosity, but it won’t stop us from covering everything we can at CEATEC, and we’ll certainly be our usual skeptical selves toward all that we see, including Panasonic stuff. Just think of it as if we’re “embedded.”

Tokyo Motor Show Preview: Gullwing Subaru Hybrid

You can take pretty much any car, add gullwings, and it is instantly cool. Or not. But I’d have to catagorize this upcoming Subaru hybrid concept car as pretty cool, something I don’t often do with Subarus. I mean just look at those doors!

Whether or not Subaru ever makes this odd two-motor hybrid or it remains as another sidelined concept, who knows. But they’ve got some good ideas, and gullwing doors. Yeah, I’m really a fan of the doors.

Robo-One Tournament shows off thought-controlled robot

Robo-One Tournament shows off thought-controlled robot

We now have more proof from the front lines of robotics research that the upcoming sci-fi epic The Surrogates is simply an early look at the very real near future. Created by indie-tinkerer Taku Ichikawa of the University of Electro-Communications in Tokyo, this new robot actually responds to the thoughts of its master.

The non-invasive thought-control interface was specially designed to help Ichikawa and his robot successfully compete in the latest Robo-One robot battle in Toyama, Japan. While the implications for future surgery and space exploration using this human-to-robot dynamic are fascinating, the possible gaming applications are enough to boggle the mind.

Travel to 8 of the geekiest places on Earth using Google Street View

Travel to 8 of the geekiest places on Earth using Google Street View

Travel is expensive these days. If you want to take a trip so see some tech meccas, such as Akihabara in Tokyo or Cape Canaveral in Florida, it’s going to cost you. Unless you travel virtually, that is.

With the Google Maps Street View car having traveled all over the world by this point, it’s easier than ever to scope out some of the coolest tech-related sites without getting up out of your chair. Hit the jump for street-level shots of some of the most high-tech places on Earth. No alien flyovers, please.

Giant Gundam robot presides over Japanese wedding

Giant Gundam robot presides over Japanese wedding

Most weddings in the West are designed to take place “before the sight of God,” but in Japan couples are now making their marriage vows under the fierce gaze of a “new” god–a giant robot. Japan’s T&G wedding planners held a contest in which 500 entrants competed for the right to be married in front of the new giant Gundam robot in Tokyo.

Yesterday the winning couple took their vows at the foot of Gundam and then, with newborn baby in hand, the family deeply bowed in unison to the Gundam robot. You’ve got to hand it to Japan, even in matters of bowing before our future robot masters, the country remains ahead of the curve. You can see more images of the surreal ceremony here.

Magnetically-propelled cars could save our cities from congestion

Magnetically-propelled cars could save our cities from congestion

Philipp Siebourg’s Induction Powered Vehicle (or IPV) isn’t just a concept for a new kind of car, it’s a complete transportation system designed to reduce congestion in big urban centers. Instead of bumper-to-bumper traffic in the heart of the city, Siebourg’s proposal calls for a car-free, magnetized area that is serviced exclusively by automated personal transports.

Each IPV can be controlled by it’s passenger via a mobile device (in the example provided below, the passenger is holding an iPhone), and you can drive and park at an IPV loading zone much like you would a bus station. Siebourg also calls for an alternative system in managing traffic — which is similar to how some intersections in Tokyo operate — whereby all the cars proceed at once, then pedestrians, and then bikers, rather than mixing it all up.

Check out the gallery below for more of the IPV transportation system.
