Lizards Feel the Heat from Climate Change

The sharp edges of the blue spiny lizard will not protect it against climate change. New research shows that it has gone extinct at 24 out of 200 sites in Mexico since 1975. The cause was not loss of habitat to spreading agriculture or sprawling cities. Rather, it was hotter springs, according to research published in the May 14 issue of Science .

And that means climate change could end up driving nearly 20 percent of existing lizard species extinct by 2080.

Geologists Drill into Antarctica and Find Troubling Signs for Ice Sheets’ Future

ERICE, Italy–If you think of Earth’s poles as fraternal twins, the Arctic has been the wild one in recent years, while the Antarctic has been a steady plodder. Withered by summer heat, Arctic sea ice has shrunk to record low coverage several times since 2005, only to rebound to within 95 percent of its long-term average extent this winter. By comparison, Antarctica, with some 90 percent of the world’s glacial reserves, has generally shed ice in more stately fashion.     [More]

Keeping Coal Mines from Exploding

Mining is the second most dangerous profession in the U.S., averaging 27 deaths for every 100,000 workers per year, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. That safety record is now blown. On April 5th, 25 of the roughly 20,000 miners in West Virginia died in a tragic incident at the Upper Big Branch mine. Four remained missing as of Friday.

The explosion appears to have been caused by a buildup of methane . An odorless, colorless, tasteless gas that you know as natural gas. It explodes at concentrations in the air of as little as 5 percent. The incident also could have been caused or exacerbated by coal dust, which is equally combustible. That’s why we burn it to make electricity.

Hear that? All is quiet as Ford’s Transit Connect Electric hits New York City’s streets

Fracking to Free Natural Gas?

That’s the sound of fracking –pumping a mix of water, sand and chemicals a mile or more into the Earth to shatter shale deposits and release the natural gas within.

From the Barnett shale in Texas to the "supergiant" Marcellus shale that stretches from West Virginia to New York State, so much natural gas has been found that the U.S. may have enough to burn for 100 years or more. And burning natural gas releases 43 percent less CO2 than burning coal.
