Mercedes Brings Hydrogen to the Highway Next Spring

Fuel cells are highly interesting bits of tech. Literally moon shot technology brought to earth, they’ve been the darling of some green energy types and certain car companies for awhile now. Mercedes-Benz for instance, arguably the people who invented the automobile, has been making great strides putting fuel cell technology into street cars.

We’ve followed Mercedes’ efforts in this arena, from the practical B-Class F-Cell shown above to the the fanciful F-Cell Roadster concept, so we’re excited to hear the Germans say they’re bringing a fuel cell powered B-Class to “select customers” in Europe and America next spring. [...]

Charge ‘Er Up: OnStar’s New Mobile App Keeps Tabs on Chevy Volt Recharge System

LAS VEGAS–With its much-anticipated Chevy Volt set to hit the streets by the end of the year, General Motors is beginning to provide a more detailed (although by no means complete) picture of life with an electric car. Focusing on the daily logistics of making sure your electric car has enough juice to get you from point A to point B, Chevy and GM subsidiary OnStar have now introduced a smart phone application to help drivers remotely manage the charging process . The announcement came here late Tuesday at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). [More]

Electric car batteries with 500-mile range on the way?

Electric car batteries with 500-mile range on the way?

We’re stoked about electric cars, but unless their range can exceed the 100 miles or so of today’s electro-cars, they’re going to be a nonstarter with mainstream consumers. IBM aims to change all that with its Battery 500 Project, just kicked off at the company’s Alamaden Laboratory in San Jose, California.

They’re pooling the resources of 40 of the world’s best engineers and scientists, with a goal of creating lithium-air batteries with a 500-mile range, 200 miles farther than a typical gasoline-fueled car. Not only do they intend to make car batteries more efficient, they also aim to make them smaller and much lighter.

If IBM can create a 500-mile car battery cheap enough for the rest of us to afford, we might all be driving electric cars a few years from now. Armed with an impressive brain trust, key patents, and hopefully some serious economic-stimulus bucks, the Battery 500 Project could change the world.

Hyundai Enters The Green Auto Market With a Bang | IAA Frankfurt Auto Show

Much has been written about the launch of the Hyundai i10 concept, the company’s first foray into the electric car market. It’s an impressive car and the underlying technology trumps many other competitors.

For example, there’s the Li-Poly battery which Hyundai claim will charge almost twice as fast as the Li-Ion battery championed by Renault and other manufacturers. Of course, this assumes you have an industrial outlet with enough amps to provide the power fast enough.

However, the Hyundai i10 is more than a standalone electric car. It is part of a range which the company has obviously thought about long and hard before bringing it to market.

7 Groundbreaking Electric Vehicles Built Before the 1900s

One might be surprised that the EV dates all the way back to the 1800s. In fact, in its heyday, there were 4,192 cars made in the U.S. and 28-percent of them were electric! Here are some defining moments from New York City’s first fleet of electric taxis to setting the very first land speed record.

Carriage Built in 1830s Uses Non-Rechargeable Batteries

Robert Anderson built a crude electric carriage in the 1830s using non-rechargeable batteries. It eventually became the rechargeable Detroit Electric (1907 – 1939) which in one test run achieved a 211.3 mile range and a top speed of 20 MPH. It was mainly marketed to women who didn’t want to bother with hand cranking an engine.

America are You Ready to E-Up!? Volkswagen Thinks So.

Last week, Volkswagen debuted it’s E-Up! electric vehicle during the Frankfurt motor show. VW has already coined its new car “The Beetle for the 21st Century.” And now, according to VW, this city-sized electric vehicle concept will be Americanized and super-sized (okay, super-sized may be a slight exaggeration) for its American debut shortly after its launch in Europe in 2013.

In an article published by autoweek.com, the board member in charge of product development at Volkswagen AC, Ulrich Hackenberg, summed up in one sentence why they are developing an electric car. “The reason we are working on an electric vehicle is the American market.”
