U.S. Electrical Grid Undergoes Massive Transition to Connect to Renewables

The U.S. electrical grid is the largest interconnected machine on Earth: 200,000 miles of high-voltage transmission lines and 5.5 million miles of local distribution lines, linking thousands of generating plants to factories, homes and businesses. The National Academy of Engineering ranks it as the greatest engineering achievement of the 20th century. What it cannot do is support the massive shift to low-carbon power that scientists warn will be needed to avoid catastrophic climate change impacts. [More]

Conclusion of UN COP15 climate summit (press release)

Commenting on the conclusion of UN climate summit in Copenhagen today, the UK based coalition Stop Climate Chaos (SCC), which organised The Wave – the world’s largest demonstration for action on climate change in London, said:

The challenge at Copenhagen was to deliver a new, binding and fair programme of international action to keep global warming as far below the danger threshold of 2 degrees C. There has been a gross failure to achieve this and the fault lies squarely with the industrialised countries. They have not pledged sufficiently deep and rapid cuts in emissions, nor offered enough finance to assist developing countries. Given the threat that humanity and the world’s ecosystems face this is unforgiveable.

It defies comprehension that, confronted by the greatest danger that humanity has ever faced, our political leaders are trying to pass off a dismal, so-called political declaration, as progress. This deal will not prevent catastrophic climate change.

Millions across the globe mobilised to give our leaders a clear mandate to act decisively. Their collective response has been dire and utterly irresponsible. We will not rest until we have pressured our leaders to show the political courage and vision necessary, in the short time left, to pull us back from the brink of disaster.

Action in Copenhagen! Sign the petition!

Today world leaders began arriving in Copenhagen and our activists are ensuring that from the moment leaders set foot in Copenhagen they receive a strong message that makes clear what we all expect from them: action.

We are heading for a deal that leaders will hail as a success but will not protect us or prevent catastrophic climate change.

Those countries that have contributed the least to climate change stand to suffer first from the consequences.

Leaders like President Obama, Chancellor Merkel, President Sarkozy and PM Brown must now take the necessary action and the bold steps that are needed to deliver the fair, ambitious and legally binding deal that the world is demanding. [...]

COP 15: twelve days to save the planet

Gland, Switzerland – The climate conference in Copenhagen is the best opportunity to agree on a climate deal that can save the planet from devastating climate change. We need to take it.

“An ambitious climate deal is not a punishment. It is an amazing political and economic opportunity. It is the most important document politicians will ever sign,” Carstensen said.

“An ambitious climate deal is not a punishment. It is an amazing political and economic opportunity. It is the most important document politicians will ever sign,” Carstensen said.

After months of preparations the time has finally come. Tens of thousands of negotiators and politicians are gathering in Copenhagen, and millions of people from around the world will be watching them. Their lives, the lives of their children and grandchildren will depend on the decisions made in Denmark. Leaders have been given twelve days to save the planet and they must use them.

“Copenhagen is the best time and opportunity to agree on a climate deal which could save our planet from catastrophic climate change. Another opportunity like that may not come in time,” said Kim Carstensen, the leader of WWF Global Climate Initiative. “The world has given a green light for a climate deal. Citizens, media, NGOs, businesses, church members and most other relevant institutions have given politicians their backing and urged them to make the only right decision: sign an ambitious climate agreement.”

According to WWF, there is a clear choice to be made: Leaders can take the unique opportunity and try to repair the damage before it is too late, allow people and businesses around the world to start a smooth transition into a low carbon economy and start benefiting from it as soon as possible. Or they can delay it, put lives of millions of people at risk, and deprive the world of the greatest opportunity of our lifetime: a green and sustainable future.

BAA abandon plans for third runway at Heathrow

Reacting to the news that BAA will not be submitting their application to expand Heathrow with a third runway, Stop Climate Chaos Coalition director Ashok Sinha said,

A new runway at Heathrow would have increased the UK’s carbon emissions. This welcome decision to shelve Heathrow’s expansion plans instead increases our chances of preventing catastrophic climate change. As the Climate Change Committee said today, we now urgently need a step change increase in our effort to deliver a low carbon economy – creating large numbers of new jobs and business opportunities along the way.
